Have you ever noticed red, dry patches on a baby’s face or body? Or maybe you’ve experienced itchy, dry patches on your hands, inner elbows or legs? Thirty percent of the population have eczema, a dreaded skin condition. Chances are, you’ve had it or you know of someone who has.
So what is eczema?
Who can get it and why? In this article I’m going to spread some awareness about what eczema is, who gets it and why. I am also going to give some hope to those who suffer with this terrible condition. I have found that it is possible to improve it with the right approaches as I have healed my own eczema by about 95% so far.
Eczema (also called dermatitis) is a dry skin condition. Symptoms of eczema are different for everyone. My eczema appeared as red, dry and oozing infected patches on my cheeks, hands, outer elbows, torso, and legs. However, some people get eczema on their neck, inner elbows and behind the knees. A common symptom is that it’s usually itchy for everyone to some extent. My eczema was normally extremely itchy and got worse in winter. I used to joke that I was like a dog with fleas because I was always itching myself all over. Scratching made it worse though by causing it to bleed and get more infected.
Symptoms of eczema can include a few or all of the following:
- Dry, sensitive skin
- Red, inflamed skin
- Itchy skin- mild to severe
- Weeping, crusted or bleeding skin
- Rough, scaly or leathery patches
- Dark areas of skin
Who can get it?
Eczema is very common but is not infectious. It can begin in babies, childhood, or later in life. In my case, I got it when I was a teenager and it continued into adulthood.
Why do people get it?
There are many factors that may contribute to eczema and these can vary for each person. They include nutritional, emotional, biochemical and environmental factors. For me, I believe it was a combination of stress, nutritional deficiencies, and toxins in my body. This caused my body not to function properly, my skin losing its ability to naturally moisturise itself so it got dry and my immune system lowering so I was prone to skin infections.
Healthy skin should remain moist and supple. After changing my lifestyle, diet, detoxing and attitudes, the health of my skin improved and became moist and less dry. It is quite amazing how flaky my skin used to be, how when I rubbed it, dry skin would come off everywhere but overtime my skin has become so soft and moist. My eczema slowly improved until almost disappearing.
